It's Always About The Oil

How the CIA Overthrew Iran's Democracy In 4 Days:

Back in the 50's Iran had a Democratic Constitutional Monarchy under the Shah, just like Britain under their monarch, where the ability to make and pass legislation resided with the elected Iranian Parliament headed by a Prime Minister. That PM decided Iran should be getting a bigger cut of the joint venture British/Iranian oil company's (now known as BP) huge profits, but of course the Brits refused so he nationalized it so all the benefit of Iranian oil could go to Iranian people.

So, first the Brits try to get the Shah to fire the PM and the people revolted, forcing the Shah to leave the country. Then the Brits go crying to their US Cousins to help them out to get rid of this PM. The CIA set about spreading payola to mount a smear and opposition campaign in Iran on the PM and even tried to detain him but failed to nab him that time. Ironically one group getting the payola to oppose was the Iranian Islamic Clergy, the guys in charge now who are so obsessed with their women folk's hair. The second US attempt to detain him was successful; he remained in jail/house arrest for the rest of his life. He died in 1967.

When the Shah retuned back to Iran, he dissolved the democratically elected Parliament, and ruled as authoritarian autocrat viewed as a US/Brit puppet for the next 25 years until the Iranian Revolution forced him back into exile in 1979 and the Islamic Clergy came to power. It's always about the oil.
