The polio vaccine, developed in the 1950s by Jonas Salk and later improved with the oral vaccine by Albert Sabin, was instrumental in nearly eradicating the disease. Large-scale vaccination campaigns, especially using the easy-to-administer oral vaccine, enabled widespread immunization across many countries. Global efforts, coordinated by organizations like WHO, Rotary International, UNICEF, and CDC, helped create herd immunity, significantly reducing the transmission of the poliovirus and dramatically lowering the number of cases worldwide.
Thanks to these coordinated efforts, surveillance, and rapid response to new cases, the incidence of polio has plummeted from hundreds of thousands annually to just a few cases today. Although the disease has not been completely eradicated yet, the progress made demonstrates the vaccine’s vital role in bringing the world close to eliminating polio entirely. Continued vaccination and global cooperation are essential to achieving complete eradication.
