(Longggg rant ahead, but please read everything)
It's summer break, which means every student in Korea will start attending hagwons every day.
I go to a hagwon named NBUS that specializes in SAT and ACT, and it is not your typical SAT hagwon. There is only one (SMARTASS but mean) teacher and he teaches these things called keywords (most important word in a passage), paraphrased idea (summary of passage in one word), restatement of the paragraph, syntax (grammar sentence structure), and etc. Have you ever even heard of those words? Nah, I haven't either. Which really makes me doubt if this hagwon is worth it.
The teacher keeps on telling me EVERY DAY during class to quit other hagwons and tutorings. He says " They go to those SAT hagwons that barely teach you how to read, analyze or write, and in the actual test they don't even know how to read the passages properly so they all fail and come to my hagwon and I raise their scores in matters of days! I have a whole list of them. Every single hagwon out there is bullshit, with their bullshit teachers teaching bullshit curriculums." He told me this EVERY DAY SEVERAL TIMES starting from June. I mostly agree with this but I wonder.. if every single hagwon is shit, then why are there so many Korean people going to good universities and actually doing well?
And just a few days ago he was saying " You either quit that shitty tutoring place or I'll refund your money," like why? Why the fuck can I not do both? It's not like NBUS is the only hagwon with proper education in Korea. He even yelled at my mom for me to quit going to those tutoring places and said " Your mom owes me an apology and so do you for treating me like that" BITCH WHAT THE FUCK?
And the keyword and paraphrased idea shit. He says there is no answer, but every single fucking thing I get he says its wrong. Hypocritical much? Everything we do is stressing the hell out of me.
Also, he gave me math problems that literally said ' Many, many US college students set up the equation incorrectly and get the wrong answer.' and he yells at the class when nobody gets it because it's a 'simple logic problem that even kindergartners get right' ,,,
My hagwon focuses on fully understanding the SAT and ACT questions and making sure we get a good score. But I honestly, like I said, don't know if it's worth it because nobody else studies in this way. They don't even know what paraphrasing is probably ^^ Like for example, today, he said "I'm going to teach biology" and he printed out this random page about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and made me find one word that was the most important out of all (keyword). Took me one hour and I honestly don't even think it's the right answer.
I texted my teacher regarding of everything that I said above and he deletes all the chats and blocks me and my mom on kakaotalk. Today he literally dissed me in class speaking some nonsense bullshit that was supposed to be the 'answer to my questions' and I got so fucking pissed I started crying and I had to leave the classroom. So embarrassed. I don't know how I'm going to see my classmates from now on with pride.
NBUS is so tiring. I studied for six hours today for the first time (noon to 6:30PM) and there was ONE ten minute break. I couldn't even eat anything in between. I'm already pissed enough yet this lunch issue is making me feel worse and I'm always so grumpy and sleepy and unmotivated in class. Teacher says my attitude sucks.
And then we go home and do the EXACT same homework every.single.god.damn.day..
keep your spirits up you know :)
more like kill my fucking ass
someone please help this is such a big issue and it's really depressing the fuck out of me. Christine School June 20, 2018 at 8:56 am00
Hmm. I live in the US . We started learning about that stuff freshman year of highschool. Yeah it's kind of hard but look it up online for examples and definitions . I think for you to get into a university and do well you need to know that stuff. What grade are you in? I'm suprised they haven't taught you that yet in normal ( not summer) school. anonymous 7 years ago
