Cockatiel

My cockatiel, Merry, died today. I only had him a month. I got him from a rescue. Do you know how awful it feels to have an animal for such a little time after rescuing it only for it to die?
Anywho, he was sleeping a bit more for 2 days last week and I called the vet then, but he started perking up so I canceled the appointment. He seemed fine. Back to exploring the living room, climbing around his cage, eating, and preening. All the things. Well I noticed this morning that there was poop stuck on his vent. I went to grab him and he let me without a fuss. This is bad because Merry is very hand shy. I wiped up his vent and sat him down and he just deflated. Wasn't responding at all. I immediately took him to the vet, but he died on the way there. The vet said he had been battling an illness for months. Could possibly be due to his kidneys or liver. The vet said that even if I came earlier there was nothing she could do. Now I'm worried about his flockmate, Pippin, who is sooo attached to him. (They came together as a bonded pair) I'm scared he's going to die of a broken heart.
I feel so shitty. Like I failed him. He was doing so well until he just..wasn't..
