Sign the DNR and STFU

I saw a comedian on Netflix joke about how people that are too old, hanging on to life is selfish. "Just take your turn and go to the ground". It was very funny in that context. But as an ICU nurse I think about it all the time.

And it's not even the patients themselves, it's the fucking selfish, stupid, illiterate fucked family members that just want to torture their 98-year-old grandma with dementia. Mostly out of guilt of being shitty family members that never helped her or never visited her. They want to show "they care" by being absolute sociopaths and demanding miracles from medical staff, sometimes violently.

No motherfucker, no one thinks you're mother Teresa because you bitch and moan and scream to a tired over night doctor because granny is tanking. We all think you're just a piece of rat shit because you won't sign a DNR and let her go in peace.

It's not enough that she's got tubes hanging out of every hole (artificial or not) and we have her on 16 different medications just to keep her heart pumping with her brain completely gone. You HAVE to make us break her ribs with chest compressions and strip her out of any shred of dignity at the end. FUCK YOU.

Life ends, deal with it, and move on. Now, we at least have the medical knowledge and technology to give people a dignified comfortable death. We didn't have that just a few decades ago.
