Tale Of Two Transplants

I had a friend in his 30s with sarcoidosis who was denied a lung transplant operation because he couldn't get down to the weight the doctor wanted in order to perform the transplant. He had lost so much weight, but was still 10 lbs over, so he missed out and got passed over. His health started to decline after that, mostly from the sadness and disappointment of having the opportunity taken from him and he died before another opportunity came his way. Sure he got that organ donation has to be carefully chosen so as to make the most of the few available, but still all the weight he did lose should have been an indicator that he was serious about losing the rest.

So today I hear some famous actress died that played on Buffy the Vampire Slayer at 39 because her body may have rejected her transplanted liver. Her transplanted liver she got because like the actor Larry Hagman she destroyed her own liver from alcoholism. Did the drs make her have to jump though hoops to get this transplant. Did she have to prove she was clean and sober for an extensive amount of time. I bet they did not. And I bet she was still drinking after the transplant just like Larry Hagman was for 8 years after his transplant until health complication from it required surgery in 2003 that he claimed made him stop for good. If you're rich and famous the health system treats you great, they can't do enough to make sure you get what you need no problem. If you're not you get treated like shit and have to fight to even get the basic care.
