Defamation

There is a relative who has spread malicious lies and fake stories about me and my dad to other relatives. I discovered it over time from various sources. I am shocked. This relative has given my mom, dad and me a lot of pain. I told my mom and dad everything that I discovered. I also know some disturbing facts about this relative that would be illegal to disclose and hence I kept everything to myself.
I do not know what is the law when it crosses international boundaries. I live in Canada. This relative lives in US. They are maligning and defaming us to other relatives in Canada, US and India. People are hence distancing themselves from us and not inviting us to weddings. I seriously want to sue or send a legal notice to this relative for defamation. I have kept quiet since the age of 7 and now I am a middle aged adult. This has to stop.
Sometimes enough is enough.
