So Trump's not saying anything new about Canada, mostly unpopulated wilderness that has a population roughly the same size as California. The only thing new is it's being said out loud in public. It has always been thought of along the lines as of some sort of US Common Wealth like Guam or Puerto Rico in the US. Many US based companies, like auto and personal product makers, have set up manufacturing there to take advantage of cost effectiveness in labor and production, and what they make there when shipped back to the US is counted as Canadian exports to the US and towards the Canadian GDP which only 10% of the US GDP. Along with these trade agreements, there are also military ones as well like NORAD that protects the air space over Canada and the US. Since Canada is basically an impotent country militarily that also has w/ no nukes, this is a very lopsided arrangement. The US does/will do all the protecting and defending, while the Canadians as stated in their National Anthem don't do much more than "stand on guard".
