Trump's Ukrainian natural resource deal sound like a page right out of France's playbook how they screwed over Haiti, turning it into the basket case it is today.

When Haiti's slave revolt sent France packing, Haiti declared themselves an independent nation in 1804. Twenty years later France sails back with warships demanding payment $150M francs for lost property, including the freed slaves, or else things will be going back to the way they were twenty years ago - and the rest of the world did not bat an eye or offer Haiti any support. So to remain a free country Haiti agreed to pay the debt, but had to borrow $30M francs to make the first payment - secured from a French bank, of course. And each time after that when a loan was needed to cover a payment of the initial demand or on a previous loan it was from a French bank. And all through the turbulent French history following, the one constant was the enforcement of Haiti's debts. Haiti managed the final payment on the initial demand in 1883, but France was still bleeding them dry from loan payments to French banks. In 1911 the US, not wanting to miss out, funded the acquisition of Haiti's treasury, packed up all the gold in it in 1914, and moved it to a NYC bank now called Citibank. The rest of Haiti's debts were now to be paid to the American investors. It took Haiti until 1947 to finish paying the debts owed to Citibank. In 2016 the French parliament repealed the 1825 King Charles X payment demand from Haiti, but they are still keeping the money paid.
