I've recently gotten back into an old game that I used to (and still do) love. But everytime I read comments about it or watch playthroughs of this game I get really annoyed by all the people saying "this would have been good if it wasn't an Amnesia game" "this is a walking simulator" "it's not scary"
What are you on about? The first one that usually pisses me off is the first about it not "fitting" as an Amnesia game. This is a stupid opinion to me because this game and it's story almost directly connect to the first Amnesia (the dark descent). The main characters are related, there are references to the first games setting, vitae, orbs, and the monsters are essentially made the same way. If this game was released and it wasn't apart of the Amnesia universe, I guarantee the same people who say it isn't an Amnesia game would be bitch about how it is copying Amnesia.
The second thing that always bothers me is when people call it a "walking simulator" no it isn't it's an atmospheric horror game. That doesn't mean it's a walking simulator. Also if this game is a walking simulator (no hud/inventory etc) then so is Soma. A game by the same developer Frictional that is said to be one of the best horror games ever. I recently replayed it and I believe that if AMFP is a walking simulator then so is Soma. There's a mode in Soma in which you can actually remove the threat of dying so monsters become low threats. Which makes it even more of a walking simulator that AMFP as you are always in danger in that game. Also saying it's a walking simulator like that's a negative thing. Games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture are some of the most beautifully made games in my opinion. And I don't see why this label is always given in a disdainful way.
The third, it's not scary. Those people simply haven't played the game. The game has a very tense atmosphere and uses the environment to create a constant sense of foreboding and danger for the okay, slight noises or shadows in the dark will make you jump. I've also seen from plenty people playing being scared (crouching and creeping along to avoid the monsters and exclaiming when a jumpscare occurs) then at the end saying it's not scary.... Sure whatever I guess you were screaming for kicks then.. also - just like the first Amnesia - the horror and scares are made by the story of human cruelty and suffering. So if you don't think this game is scary you haven't played and/or you just aren't paying attention.
I'm sick of people with brain dead takes on an amazing horror game. That is all.
