2016 - "..the incident that occurred during an American naval exercise near the island of Okinawa. On 26th of October, a Chinese Song-Class submarine surfaced within five miles of the USS Kitty Hawk airplane carrier in the Pacific Ocean. Several weeks before the US delegation met with their Chinese counterparts, ships from the Pacific fleet were stationed in international waters between Taiwan and South Japan.
The carrier was surrounded by a dozen of ships in a protective formation, but nevertheless, the Chinese sub managed to slip through unnoticed. It came as a surprise that the Americans were unable to detect the lone submarine earlier, for their extensive defense screen included a submarine and anti-submarine helicopters, all responsible for protecting the battle group from an underwater attack."
If the US can't keep track of their own stealth hardware & asked the public to help them find it, the F-35 stealth plane gone missing after the pilot ejected, makes sense they aren't doing any better keeping track of the Chinese stealth hardware either. And since the Chinese deliberately revealed that sub, it means they've got something much better not yet seen. Is the US really going to go to war over an island inhabited by majority Chinese people about 2x the size of Long Island w/o any real strategic value to the US.

No way, Congress won't be able to muster up enough votes.
The US does even formally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation from China. The real problem is Taiwan's proximity to the Philippines - and that's why US bases are reopening there. US wants front line fighting / forward operating positions as far away from US territory as possible should some SHTF with China. And China seizing Taiwan inches them closer to those in the Philippines. anonymous 1 week ago
