The old lady who hung out at the closed laundromat place used to mutter that folks who had nowhere to go that would take them in were in the mostest hurry to get started to go there. the building and the old lady are gone now.

That's true OP. Nothing gets done about any dangerous situation that regular folks have to deal with and complain about until someone important or their close ones fall victim to it. Our town had a shopping strip off of one of the busiest streets in town. There was a Walmart, supermarket, McDonalds, shoe store, jewelry store in this busy shopping strip with no light to exit it back onto the street, where the majority of people wanted to do a left turn onto it. There was a bad wreck there at least once a month and people petitioned for a traffic light which was always rejected. Then the wife of some bigshot in town had a bad accident there and a new traffic light was in less than a month later. The funny thing is that was over 20 years ago and that shopping strip is basically a ghost town now with most of the places closed or moved on closer to the new larger Walmart a few miles away, but that light is still there and in service.
