Actually colonial rule developed those places without it they were backward regimes and they have went back to that to some extent in varying degrees based on abilities. It helped the places more then the colonial regimes. Most borders are correct some are political compromises to maintain peace. Most last but in thr middle east kurds should be separated one day they will be because it will end in war if they don't.

The French sure did mess up Haiti. It took them 122yrs to pay the money demanded by France in 1825 for their freedom they secured in an uprising 21yrs prior or else the French were going to enslave them again. No countries, courts, etc. were willing to oppose this French ultimatum, so the Haitian paid the money and when they could not make payments they were forced to take out loans from French banks to cover them putting them even deeper in debt. The US banks became the new payee for the last 50 yrs or so after they occupied the island. But prior to that the US illegally laid claim to an island, Navassa, belonging to Haiti in 1856 in order to mine guano for its nitrates that were used in making gunpowder and explosives at that time. This was a valuable resource that the Haitians could have used to help pay down the French debt quicker, but once again no other countries or courts supported Haiti. The dollar amount of mined guano was in the tens of millions before the supply was exhausted and operations needed early 1900's. To this day the Haitian dispute over Navassa continues and the island is still under US control, maintained as a National Wildlife Reserve.
