I am a starfleet starship for this example. Imagine it going through an asteroid field. Each one of those asteroids is representative of one of your friends screaming demands, attacking, sowing hate, or trying to sabotage the ship. In response, the ship has to keep its shields at maximum all the time just to survive. It's incredibly draining on the ship's power and resources. The shields keep getting relentlessly battered over and over again. Those shields are very well designed and have been perfected through testing. The shield manages to hold up against all odds for years. Yet, there is a problem. Over time, the shield is beginning to lose its integrity. It tries to draw on more power, but finds only dregs in the reserves. The shield begins to degrade and the ship starts taking damage. Right now the shield is down to a measly 3% and can't take much more. If that shield gets breached, the ship will either break apart into 1000 pieces or the warp core will breach and it will explode. Neither is a pretty outcome.
